Special Features of LED Transformers Explained Simply

Constant Current Transformers

(CC - Constant Current) with a constant current output (partially adjustable) and a variable voltage output. Delivered as part of the product or used as an alternative or replacement for existing external transformers (drivers/ballasts) to operate LED chips in downlights, panels, recessed spotlights, etc.

Alternating Current Transformers

(AC – Alternating Current) provide a constant output voltage of 12 V and a variable output current for operating 12V lamps or spots. These lamps have at least one integrated resistor for current limiting and a built-in rectifier circuit that converts the transformer’s AC voltage into a DC voltage suitable for LEDs. It should be noted that LEDs, as capacitive loads, generate reactive power when operated with AC. This means that for correct transformer sizing, not only the active power of the connected lamps (in watts) is relevant, but also the actual apparent power (in VA). Our two AC transformers (Art.-No. 111213 and 112669) are distinguished by their dimmability and the absence of a minimum load – even a single 2W G4 lamp can be operated without any problems. Important: If a TRIAC dimmer (phase-cut or phase-control) is used before one of these transformers, the reactive power can increase during dimming – depending on the dimmer, the LED lamp, and the dimming level. In extreme cases, the actual apparent power can be up to 3 times higher. When this aspect is taken into account, there is nothing preventing the use of our two blue AC transformers with their excellent price-performance ratio.

Direct Current Transformers

(DC – Direct Current) with a constant, partially adjustable voltage output of 12, 24, or 48 V and a variable output current. Intended for operating 12V/24V/48V lamps, spots, and flexible strips, which – in addition to the LEDs themselves – only have an integrated resistor for current limiting (or an IC for current adjustment in the case of our CC series LED flexible strips), which is mounted directly on the respective PCB.

Note:

  • Plan a power reserve: Never operate LED transformers at their maximum load. Ideally, always calculate about 20% power reserve – this also applies to dimmers, flexible strip controllers, and similar devices.
  • Operate within specifications: Use all transformers and operating devices strictly within the specified limits for ambient temperature and protection class.
  • Ensure sufficient ventilation: Never cover transformers, e.g., with thermal insulation. Make sure there is adequate distance between individual transformers.
  • Safe commissioning: Switch transformers on only when all components are fully connected. Do not make adjustments (e.g., output current adjustment, ColorSwitch) while in operation; always disconnect the supply voltage first.
